HOUSE EXTENSION

Nisbet Road, Gullane

This imposing Edwardian house stands on the brow of Gullane Hill looking out over East Lothian and the Firth of Forth. Originally planned with all its public rooms to the front, and service areas arranged around a courtyard to the back, the house gave the impression of turning its back on the spacious rear garden. Our client’s brief was to create a new living space which would take advantage of the views to the north and establish a stronger connection between house and garden.

A requirement that the new extension should “look like an original part of the house” led to a simple, traditional building form. Terracotta roof tiles sourced from France match existing tiles, stone from the demolished courtyard walls was salvaged to form the outer leaf of the new walls. Timber sash and case windows were used to match the scale, detail and architectural expression of the house.
