NEW HOUSE

Hill Road, Gullane, East Lothian

This new house occupies former garden ground of a traditional villa located in the Gullane Hill Conservation Area.

The main body of the house, containing living and sleeping accommodation is a simple single storey cottage with a traditional 45° pitched roof. Auxiliary spaces are expressed as simple annexes “plugged in” round the periphery of the main form.

Internally the client wanted the traditional feel of large cellular rooms, but with the flexibility of open plan where possible. Circulation spaces have been designed therefore to occupy a minimum of the available floor space, while still providing distinct private and public routes between and through the reception rooms.

The design makes best use of available renewable energy technology. Heating is provided by a ground source heat pump with two 100m probes located between the house and the garage; a significant percentage of water heating needs will be provided by solar panels on the south facing pitched roof of the garage; mechanical ventilation is provided in the form of a whole house system incorporating ground/air heat transfer to supply air and heat recovery at extract.

In addition to active energy technology, the house has been designed to take best advantage of available sunlight, with large south facing glazed openings opening to the garden, and smaller north facing openings providing vistas to the coast.
